
With the wake of recent events in corporate world of a death happening due to work stress, is a reminder to be healthy and de-stress from your work.
Every body has gone through some or the other kind of toxic work culture in their present or past offices.
Here are the few tips i would like you to consider which will help in coping or surviving in such situation.
Shut off once you log off.
We tend to have urge or indulge in office related work even after we have logged off from the work, like checking emails , looking into office app on phone or thinking about the solution for work problem . Keep you office app in phone in mute, dont check mails after work hours. And work on the solution for your work related activity in work hours possibly.
2. Dont entertain office colleagues/ managers for work after office hours.
Start being unavailable after work hours or weekends on whatsapp or calls. Draw boundary for your own sanity. I know sometimes it is necessary when there is that deadline you have to meet,but dont make it a habit. Draw line.
3. Office collegues are not your FRIENDS
Keep your personal life and professionnal life different, your office colleagues are not your FRIENDS, give it a time and then make friends in workspace. Dont share your personal details to your colleagues in office(this information can be used against you in future)
4. Delegate WORK and dont be a PERFECTIONIST
I know some of you like to work on your own than to depend on others as atlast you know it will come back to you,even i was like that. Try delegating work and be clear in your mind that not everything is your responsibilty. Neither you are the boss or owner of the company,so be loyal,sincere in your work but within office hours only. And dont be PERFECTITIONIST , sometimes it is easier and better to get it done than working on it till it is perfect.
5. Work-life balance
Have hobbies like reading,hiking,etc,anything that allows you to shut off office work. Keep your mobile away while you are at your recreational activity. Traveling allows you to unwind and clear your mind and divert you from all work stress.
6. Healthy lifestyle
Run,Yoga,hiking,jogging,meditation. Have a healthy lifestyle. Have meals on time, work can wait, health wont. Have good 7-8hours of sleep. Drink water enough, Get that morning sunlight. No caffeine after sunset. Journal your thoughts.
7. Gauge the work culture
When you are in probation or initial time in your new company, gauge the work culture. You will get the intution if its negative. Dont reach a threshold to leave such toxic environment, make a quick decision and quit if it is affecting your well being.
Dont participate in office polictics, it will drain you.
8.Learn to say NO
Learn to say NO. Dont take up a lot of work than you can handle. I know it is quite difficult sometimes to say no, but practise it.
9.Discuss
If you have a mentor, or friends in same field, discuss with them the problems you are facing in workspace, sometimes just sharing takes off a lot of stress.
10. Create a Life outside of work
Meet people, create life outside of work.
These are the few things you can keep in mind. Remember your physical and mental health is more important than your work,give it required amount of focus,same way you do your work.
